M-1 Light Rail Held in Check by FTA

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood did not feel the M-1 Light Rail project has a sustainable life beyond the initial start-up period. Of the problems listed:

  • Credible financing for short & long term - it simply doesn't look like a sustainable plan for 25 years and beyond.
  • Plans need to include provisions for cost overruns.
  • Assurance that whatever organization that received grant monies will control M-1 and be able to manage its needs daily, weekly, and longer term.
  • A regional transit authority is required to serve needs to the greater area.
The plan will also run into resistance when acquiring the land along the route and delays it will create for business and residents.
